D2R – School Prize Board
April 6, 2011Dear all,
Here you have a table with the School Team results so far in D2R. I want to express my gratitude and indeed to encourage for the next events the people involved to make possible young runners in the race; teachers, coaches, parents, friends, school staff,… and for sure a very big list. I hope next year, more schools will be participating is this amazing event.

King’s Academy Lions @ Dead2Red 2011

This year King’s Academy has been running with an extraordinary participation in the 14th edition of Dead2Red; a total of 4 teams divided in 2 students and 2 faculty teams gathered in this remarkable competition.
Thanks to Ms Reem Abu Rahmeh who suggested to open a major co-curricular activity to prepare this race; 18 students with different performances signed up to participate in D2R. Trainings started slowly, and unfortunately we lost 2 good members 2 weeks after; Karim AlHaddadin suffered a sprain in his ankle and Leanne Conway started to feel a shin pain, she knew she cannot run.
Students were training 3 days a week with Mr Bowman on Sunday, with me on Monday and alone (!) on Wednesday. Although I wasn’t sure about their commitment to work alone, they showed a very mature attitude to prepare the race with a liberty they all enjoyed. So once a week, we met to designate who will lead on Wednesday and in which work out they will work with; Mansoor Ghoto and Yursa Bitar played a decisive role to help and deal with that. The weather didn’t help to have good moments to train, many times we were force to do workouts in the gym based on abs; when they were alone, few times I saw the students running under the rain; I was really moved.
Time ran and at the beginning we were thinking to have only one team; and here is where we had some difficulties, because 6 of very committed runners cannot participate. Some people suggested to choose the best runners, but between other factors we took into account the grade of commitment and also the ones who tried to participate in 2010, whatever their performance was. Between elections and coaches opinions we design the 10 runners’ team who will represent KA. But soon, and thanks to Ms Julianne, Dr John and Coach Iyad we started to work to have 2 teams, so everybody will participate in the race, and here was when one of my dreams came true: run with the students, most provably my last D2R. All this happened a week before the race… yes, how stressful!
In 2009 my policy was not to interfere with a 100% student’s team and show them they can do it alone; also it was and is still important for me to have a coed team. Due to this year 2 teams was possible to meet, I decided to run with them; being both teams coed. In the last week Zahira Shaban gave up due to a backache so to complete the second team we invited 4 students selected from a mile test; and in the very last training where we relayed even with the bus, Joseph al Nimri dislocated one finger; Reema Lateef spent 2 days in bed because flu… we were at 2 days before the race… Finally everybody was in shape on Wednesday and here are the teams and their names in alphabetical order:

Click on the teams name to read more details about our experience and anecdotes during the race.
We went there thanks to many people who has been working hard to be able to have two students teams. We want to thank: Ms Rita Naber (for her magic wand to have two buses with drivers), Ms Dana Adwan (in charge of the accommodation at Tala Bay), Ms Ola Bseiso and Mr Bassam Amer (for the meals); Ms Julianne (for all the support); and the athletic department Ms Ghadeer Diab, Coach Iyad and Dr. Khalid Zeidan (for the first aid kits). I can’t forget the drivers who patiently and safely drove for us before, during and after the race: Hassan Abded Khalaf Al-Hawawsheh, Aref Omar Salah Iben Taree, Abdullah Husni Johar Al-Harethy and Ibrahim Salim Hasan Abu Mousa.
I am sure I forgot someone, even I am not aware how many people was involved, for all of them: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

WICK – Widmer Integrated CirKuit
December 6, 2010The WICK (Widmer Integrated CirKuit) is the King’s Academy dirty track for multiple activities like cross country, biking or simply walking. Mainly, the track runs along the inside perimeter of the campus beside the walls. Here you have some data, the map (click on it to have it bigger) and the track profile. WICK was used several times for training and tournaments from last year, but it was on October 29th of this year when King’s Academy organized the first extra scholar tournament based on the WICK track.
TRAIL DISTANCE: 3 Kilometers / 1.8 Miles
Elevation min: 768 meters, max: 800 meters
Accum. height uphill: 22 meters, downhill: 28 meters
Kind of surface: almost 100% dirty track
Click on the map to have it bigger.

If you want to know more about the WICK track click here. Notice that the track crosses several times a road, be careful at that points. The profile starts at the proposed START in the map; this start point uses to be the start line for tournaments.
Thanks to Mansoor Ghoto and Hasan Abu Kharma to measure the track with the measuring wheel getting the accurate distance of 3,027.5 meters.
New page “\(ʘ_ʘ)/Photos!”
December 6, 2010In order not to overload the posts with pictures, we have opened a page named \(ʘ_ʘ)/Photos! for those extra pictures you may want to share with the community. Upload pictures to the blog is quite manual so be patient and it will be great if you can title the set of pictures, write an intro or some comments.
STOTAN has a flickr account, but we found it not very useful due to it is not possible to open more than 3 sets, having at the end all the pictures together from different events.
Administrators reserve the right to upload or refuse the pictures they consider.
Red Sea Aqaba Marathon 2010
December 5, 2010King’s Academy runners went to run to the Red Sea Aqaba Marathon last 3rd December. We had a lot of fun, although it was quite hard to move from Amman to Aqaba, dinner, sleep and wake up early to run… Are we mad? Keep reading to know why yes, but for running.
Do not try to guess who is the freshman at the right side, he was a local kid just wanting to be in the picture…
The race was very well organized and the circuit was totally different from 2008 where we ran down Wadi Yetum. This time the circuit consisted of several comigs and goings in town (for the 21 Km. race) having smooth uphills and downhills. Although we started very early it was very hot, we felt we were in summer time. Participation in general was no so popular like in Amman or Dead Sea; a pity for the fundraising, but a pleasure for runners (personal comment).
5:38 AM – Almost ready to leave, (5:00 AM was the 21 Km wake up…)
6:06 AM – Walking to the gathering point.
6:11 AM – Warming up or pushing down the breakfast…
6:22 AM – A smile before to start. Next time we’ll do better posing in numerical order…
9:09 AM – Mohammad finishes his race.
9:16 AM – Tarik completes the 21 Km.
9:22 AM – The arrival environment.
9:25 AM – Students can’t wait for their prizes…
10:45 AM – Spontaneous, team picture.
11:00 AM to 1:30 PM – Showers, naps and an icy dip in the pool, SUPER!!!
From here we want to thank all the people involved to make this possible from King´s Academy, having all logistics arranged and very well organized. Thank you Ms Reem to chaperon and help with the organization and thanks driver Yahya Abusubhieh to drive for us safely.
I can not finish this post without the memory of which was my first long trip to run with the King’s Academy Cross Country team; it was here in Aqaba on December 2008 with that anecdote… how time flies…
Cross Country Tournament – International Community School
December 4, 2010Last Saturday 27th of November we particpated in a Cross Country race organized by the International Community School (ICS); having 2 different categories according to the ages; Under 14 y-o a circuit of 4 Km and Under 18 y-o a circuit of 6 Km. The track was traced mainly on asphalt, but the big challenge was the ‘strong’ or at least harder relieve we use to run on; uphills and downhills were more or less double from our circuit. Here you have the results in different categories and some pictures of the event.

We want to thank ICS to organize the event, and from here we want to encourage other schools to participate in upcoming events. Thank you Ms Reem to come, help and support the XC team.
Beautiful words from Ms. Reem
November 25, 2010Dear Cross Country Team,
I am sad I missed the picture! Yalla, Next Time!
You guys were all great! I really enjoyed getting to know you better during practice. It was a highlight of my day to come down to the track and see you all willing to push yourselves a little further each time. Willing to run that extra lap, to shout a cheer to one of your mates, to encourage that runner who is about to drop out….
I appreciated your team spirit, your sense of humor, your perseverance, your commitment and discipline. Each one of you has so much potential and so much to give to our community and so much to teach others about running races. I was thinking about this, our years here at Kings are like a long distance race, and the skills that we need in our Life Race are the same as what we were learning in the XC training sessions. We had to be patient with ourselves, we had to understand and know our strengths and abilities, we had to take care of our bodies, we had to train hard, we had to keep going even when we felt like we did not want to, we had to sometimes force ourselves to show up and commit, we had to strengthen our minds as well as our bodies… we also all needed each other at some point to make the run more enjoyable or more bearable. How similar is life? I hope that you will carry this experience with you as this season ends and know that you are truly unique members of King’s. Cross Country Tournaments @ King’s Academy
October 30, 2010Yesterday and today King’s Academy hosted one of the first Cross Country encounters for young runners of this academic year 2010-2011. On Friday 29th October, the National Orthodox School (NOS) ran with us in an open age race of 3.5 Km / 2.2 Mi on the WICK track, by the way this is the first competition on our own track. These were the amazing results:

Congratulations to all first places!!! I want to thank ICS and ABS coaches to come even with this weather conditions, a great way to show that is possible to go ahead in any situation. Also I want to thank Hilary Smith who help us as spotter on the track; Maheer Azmat and Yusra Bitar were helping during the runners reception; Coach Iyad, Ghadeer, Faisal and Khaled for their support and help. Also the few parents who were encouraging runners, no matter if they were their son or daughter. And also Mansoor Ghoto who took care on the timing when I did my race to attend the parents meeting (I broke my record, neither Superman will change clothes so fast…).
I hope there is no spelling mistakes on the names.
Amman International Marathon 2010
October 25, 2010Three days ago King’s Academy was in the Amman International Marathon. A very well organized event, except for the medals souvenir deliver which was very chaotic… and the anecdotic police member lifting up the tape allowing people to short cut at the very last U-turn… Here we uploaded some pictures of the event and something more…
If you want to check your time: click here.
The head of the race! Orange t-shirt runner (#8889) got Gold, red one (#6718) second place and I guess the hidden runner at the back of the group the third position.

Cycle training
October 9, 2010A great souvenir, thanks to Basil Jayousi, from the cycle “training” outing last week, click on the picture to enlarge it. I am sure you enjoyed it, but we need to improve not to spend too much time just to pick the bikes and helmets up… also we have to avoid to ride over 80 Km/h like Marah did on the way back…
…and for the people who was not cycling I know you did a good training: bravo! and you took the opportunity to ride a bike for first time ever: BRAVOIN! Thank you Ms Reem to be in charge of this group.
You will not be the first one
October 8, 2010In 12 days we have a running meeting at the Amman International Marathon; this uses to be a very crowded race and from this perspective, we ask ourselves which can be our goals, if even we do not feel we are ready to run.
Principally PARTICIPATE, spend a weekend day doing something we do not use to do with a lot of people, friends,…; it is an organized event, we get a t-shirt and also we help for a good cause. But far from the simple fact to participate, it has to have anything more, any kind of salsa to add. Arrive the first one can be terrific, but in this life there is always someone who trained more, who has much more experience or simply has a better body metabolism set from factory than ours.
There is always a first time for everything and this can be a great personal objective I am sure if you overcome it you will never forget. Assuming that you signed up for the 10 Km., this race can be the first time that:
- you participate in a professional organized competition, will you forget this first time? I am sure not.
- you run 10 kilometers non-stop; for better even for worse (maybe you finish exhausted), I am sure you will not forget
, but you did it!
- you intend to finish taking less than one hour. You arrive to the finishing line, raise your head and the stopwatch marks 00:59:19 –> You will feel like the real champion of the race.
But, where are the medals? Just change them, reward yourself with another thing. When I was young it used to be to go with friends to eat together, sometimes a vinyl record, nowadays I’m more dull, but a huge tonic drink uses to be a great reward, with friends much better.
Set goals helps us to put in a lot of effort, improve and progress; make us to follow a vertical growth line. At your next race your goals will be others: “I know what 10 km. is and now YES, I am not going to stop at all…” or “This time I will finish between 50 and 55 minutes…” or “I am ready to run 21 km…”, and so on. Then, one day you will go to run and you will realize once you overtake other runners that now you are the one who was training more, who has more experience and overcame your limits expectations.
You will not be the first one, but you can definitely break your personal records. Enjoy and go get ‘em!
¡Venga chic@s!

The WICK track
September 29, 2010The last months of the last academic year Mr. Mark Payton launched the idea to create our own Cross Country track inside campus. People involved in running were very excited with the idea, but it lost strength when we exposed the plan to administration in order to have an estimated cost. Few weeks later and promoted by the students we designed t-shirts to fundraise the project; we were sure that we will not cover the total costs, but at least to start the process.

We printed and almost sold 70 t-shirts between faculty, students and staff. Thanks all of you for that great response. But this story it does not finish here because during that time we received the visit of Dr. Meera Viswanathan. She showed very enthusiastic about the project and decided, with a beautiful gesture of support, to present to King’s Academy the whole amount necessary to cover the costs of the track in honor of our Headmaster founder Dr. Eric Widmer was leaving his post at the end of the academic year. The track became a reality.
The works on the track started in July, and although at the day of today it is not finished, it is possible to run/walk on it. In general lines the work required was/is: to trace the track, remove the plants and clean the surface, pack the soil, construct wooden bridges to save the rain water canals at the borders of the asphalt roads, enclose the track borders with stones, paint crosswalks with broken lines to advise drivers, signs and many other things and steps I am sure I have no idea.
-So what does WICK means? Widmer Integrated CirKuit, in honor of Dr. Eric Widmer.
We had no words to appreciate your support and from here we want to express our gratitude, indeed to Dr. Meera and Dr. Eric for their definitive contribution; THANK YOU. Also Mr. Mark Payton and Mr. Barry Nabholz who work altruistically giving ideas and monitoring the project. Ms. Ola Bseiso and Mr. Salah Abu Teen who implement and (still) carry out the work; also those anonymous workers, labors of this project. Mr. Faris Raba’ who was helping in the purchase and delivery of the t-shirts and the students who were involved in the t-shirt design brainstorming. And all of you who anonymous help or just encourage to make this project a reality.
I cannot wait to inaugurate officially this track! We hope it will happen soon.

Run for Water in Jordan and Dunes Club Amman Fun-Run
April 21, 2010Last Sunday the Hashemite Hash House Harriers group organized a Dow Live Earth Run for Water in Amman. Due to the short time we have received the information and that I was not feeling well we were not able to participate. So, no news or comments about the event we hope it was a success. The place selected was the SportCity track. We keep all the coordinates for future events.
Also to announce the 4th Annual Fun Run/Walk of 5K organized by the Dunes Club Amman. This family event will happen on Friday 23rd of May at Dunes Club; for further information about time, fees and categories: (06-4125290 / 0795678307 / 0797123131).
Dead Sea Marathon 2010
April 13, 2010By Mutasem AlDmour (’1o)
Last weekend, I had an amazing experience participating in the Dead Sea Marathon. I chose to run the 10K, but there were also more (21K) and less (4.2k).
The run was magnificent. I got 1 hour and 9 minutes, which is less than what I expected. The most marvelous aspect of the Marathon is the location. “Running down to the lowest point on Earth” was certainly quite an experience. The Dead Sea on the right of the track was quite attractive. The organization of the race was not perfect, but many said it was better than last year. Our 10K race started 30 minutes late. Distributing the bags at the end was also quite a mess, but thankfully the King’s Academy option, recommended by Sr. Carlos, made things easier. Also many of the buses were late, but again using King’s transportations made things easier, and gave us more time to rest.
The marathon was quite an appeal to people. Most were not close to being athletes, especially those who smoked. I think the Marathon should be funded by a Health Awareness company or an anti-smoking campaign. The track was well organized. There were police who had the cars under control. No car stepped in my way. We did not join the beach party after the race. But, I was told it was very crowded. There was water every 3k. I think the water distribution was pretty good. The problem was that it was very hot. They were also giving out bananas, but I missed all of these, or they were just for the long, really long, runs. At the finish line, they gave out medals, apples, and water. There was medical help, and many places to sit under the shadow. The participants were from all ages. The oldest were mostly foreigners. The youngest joined their parents for either a slow jog or a nice long walk. There were many King’s Academy students. There was a lot of promoting. There was music at every starting point, and at the finish line. Those students who went came by the buses of the marathon had to wait six hours until they could go home.

Happy Birthday Stotan!
January 20, 2010On January 20th Stotan is one year-old!
Created by the Cross Country team to organize, inform and show running events from King’s Academy and Jordan; and indeed for the organization of the Dead2Red race in 2009, still been a baby-blog which we hope grows up providing and sharing good news and information about the world of running.
Our effort doesn’t look useless when statistically Stotan has received in this first year 2.248 visits from 52 countries!
We take the opportunity to wish you a happy running 2010!
MET Cross Country Tournament – Jan, 16th 2010 King’s Academy
January 20, 2010Great and lovely day we had during the XC tournament organized here at home in King’s Academy; it was a quite hot day with a little bit of wind, closer to spring time than winter. There were 3 different races covering different ages: Primary School with 2 Km, Secondary School with 5 Km and High School race with 8 Km, with a total of 37 runners from ABS, ICS and KA schools.
From KA, we got some medals; GREAT JOB to Alia Suleiman, Jaafar Al-Tell, Radja Badr El-Din and Mohammad Foda. BUT I would like to thank our runners who were there in the name of King’s Academy, sweating the t-shirt doing their best unfortunately without medal award: Sandy Fahel, Juman Tabbalat, Maheera Hussein, Anvisha Azmat, Faisal Al-Tell, Johoo Shin and Hasan Abu Kharma.
Also thanks to the coaches Sonny Lim from ABS and Pascal Hoyes and Mohamed Awad from ICS to come and enjoy with us spreading a good mood. And thanks to all the people involved to succeed this great event; funior fellows, Doctors, the security staff, drivers and the Athletic department; sure I forgot names, please receive as well this gratitude message.
A great start
October 14, 2009Hi all, thank you everybody for so nice week we had, I know we started hard, but remember we have a race competition soon. It is a pleasure to announce the new possible signing up: JABER AL-SABAH. XC is finishing the arrangements and contracts so maybe he will join us next time, insha-Allah.

And here you have the marks you got last Sunday that many of you asked for. The circuit was finally 2,1 Km or 1,3 Mile:

Beginning of the year –Try outs
September 29, 2009Hi all, ¡Venga Chicos!TM is on the track again!
Yesterday we were running one LOKA to warm up and wake up the beginning of this year. The track keeps intact with the same dogs, camels and neighbors on the way.
Let me explain quickly the plan for this year:
- Run is the main activity we will do with the objective to enjoy and improve your endurance. I will do my best that the training sessions will develop in real Cross Country circuits: country side on soil tracks; so also we can enjoy the nature. Starting شوي شوي I hope you will be able to run a Demi-Marathon (20 Km. – 12.42 miles) at the end of the season. We will meet every Monday and Wednesday at the regular co-curricular time.
- Last year we introduced all about muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones involved in running with Mr. Khaled Zaidan; and I hope this year we can organize a nice workshop about this subject.
- Parallel we learnt some massage techniques I would like to improve this year with extensive stretching exercises.
- I want the team be involved to run in any, for sure scholarship or external event; and why not to participate actively to create new races.
- In addition, this year I have planned to organize an Orientation Race; basically a race where you have to follow a path never ever done before taking intermediate marks to reach the finish line, if you skip or miss a mark you are disqualified or score less points. How we do it? With the help of a compass and a map. So we will have few sessions to know how to read a map, use a compass, create profiles, organize and participate in this kind of event. For sure in the nature.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 29th we will meet again for the XC tryouts; actually everybody can join the team, and once it is formed we will decided if is necessary to divide it in: very strong students, much more strong students, super-ultra strong students… Show 17:15 or earlier in the Stadium to shake a leg.
Thank you and have run.

World Cross Country circuit try out!
April 2, 2009
Our "professional" runners stretching in the start line
Hi all, yesterday we went to run the same circuit as professional runners from all around the world did in the 37th World Cross Country Championships. Thanks to Ms. Julia Bisharat from Bisharat Golf Course to give us this opportunity. Many things changed from last Saturday: no advertisings, no music, no spectators, no TV… but the track keeps on intact, for few days because bulldozers are returning the area as the usual golf field.

Raja and Faisal leading the race
We decided to run the Junior Men or Women Senior race: 8 Km, but this time with more or less 25° C instead of 13° C last Saturday did. The circuit was really hard, very simetric with a long way down (straight) and parallel a very long uphill (with curves), finishing the last lap even higher. And these were the results…

We need to mention that Faisal Al Tell did an amazing job! In the World Championship the last junior runner finished the race in 34:02, “only” 5 minutes and 43 seconds less than Faisal! The Raja’s mark was also excellent. More details about official results: here.

George still smiling, Mansoor just behind and Micheal at the background trying to control his iFrog...
…and about team results, of course King’s Academy Team won the prize of 10 minutes lie down on the grass! See you next year in the 38th World Cross Country Championships 2010 in Bydgoszcz, Poland!

(Let’s start training how to pronounce the city…).
Amazing Race!
March 29, 2009
Yesterday Amman celebrated the 37th World Cross Country Championships, all runners did their best in a very hard circuit. All categories were leading by Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea. The organization was excellent, just it was a pity not to see more spectators. For full details about individual and team results click here: IAAF/WXC2009

Ursa Mayor
February 26, 2009Yesterday, with the students team we run Ursa Mayor and we found the well full of water! At the well a villager defied us to a 200 m. race, and who won? The good vibes that all we had: shoukran. Once we finished the work out, we were playing wellstone: a rustic basketball style where we proved how useless we would be as shepherds…
Although it was raining the path is dry and this time no dogs showed.
I love running cross country… On a track, I feel like a hamster

New route: Mari’s Path-14 Km / 8.7 Miles circuit
February 20, 2009
(Click on the picture for large view)
Mari‘s Path:
Description
Distance:14 Km / 8.7 Miles
Surface: Dirt/Asphalt
Approximate time to run: 60-75 minutes
Other: wild dogs in some parts, but none are dangerous.
For an extended run, instead of cutting across the dirt towards campus in the last 2 kilometers, keep running straight to the Madaba highway, then turn right and follow the road all the way down to King’s Academy.
We reccomend that you run this route with someone who knows the course well (Mr. Patrick Dean, Ms. Lucy Michael, and myself) at least once before running it alone.

February 2, 2009Hi all, I hope you like the new header. Are your trainers identified with the picture after your training?
Thank you Juman Tabbalat to borrow your trainers! I tryed to clean them after the fire and they just smell a little bit of gasoline. Shoukram!
Running GEAR: Trainers
January 30, 2009Somebody ask me where to buy trainers. Firstly, if you need to change your trainers please do it ASAP, there is nothing worst than use new trainers to celebrate the event.
City Mall offers a good option, ka-ching! in Foot Locker. Any mall offers good options.
For low budgets your place, but not many options is American Close Out in Swefieh, (this is the waypoint for GoogleEarth 31°57’32.36″N / 35°51’59.04″E). Find it downstairs in the corner.
Also in Swefieh you have Sport Land, but if I don’t remember bad they offer for basketball and rappers. (Waypoint: 31°57’26.93″N / 35°51’55.19″E).
Hi World! First overseas visitor!

Another circuit to run Ursa Major: 9.5 Km / 5.9 Miles
January 27, 2009Hey! Mohammad and me were running on a straight line during 30′ (so 1 hour go and back). This is the Google Earth map with the circuit, and just to advise you about very scary dogs at the end of the track (a good reason to run by the way…). I call it Ursa Major if you close the KA perimeter, it should be the same distance.
Click on the picture to see it bigger; and here you have the UTM coordinates for the Well Waypoint in GoogleEarth (sorry, but I cannot upload a kmz doc):
Well: 31°47’4.79″N / 35°50’14.57″E

Where to run – LOKA 3.3 Km / 2 Miles
January 26, 2009Ok, this page and category ‘WHERE TO RUN’ will help you to find tracks to run. One of the best options is what the Cross Country team called LOKA (Lap Outside King’s Academy). The outside perimeter of the campus starting and finishing at the main entrance is 3.3 Km (2 Miles). It should take between 15 to 20 minutes for one LOKA.
